Forged Aluminum AR-15 80% Lower Receivers
Forged lower receivers offer the strongest foundation for your AR-15, especially when forged from 7075-T6 aluminum. A forged lower receiver starts out as a piece of aluminum bar stock that is heated to 900°F before being placed between two dies in a forging press that applies thousands of pounds of force to mechanically push the aluminum into its new shape. During the forging process, the internal grain structure of the aluminum is molded to follow the shape of the lower receiver while the intense heat and pressure break up any remaining inclusions (gas pockets and impurities) to create a more uniform grain. The end result is a lower receiver blank that has significantly improved directional toughness, impact strength, fatigue, and microfracture resistance.
Note: Because the forging process requires very expensive equipment and tooling, almost all forged lower receivers blanks are sourced from either Cerro Forge or Anchor Harvey and then finish machined into 80 percent lower receivers. This is why they all look very similar and why we specifically recommend purchasing a forged lower receiver that has been machined by a reputable, major manufacturer.

CNC Machined Aluminum AR-15 80% Lower Receivers
CNC machined AR-15 lower receivers offer more complex features and designs because they are cut from a solid block of 6061 or 7075 aluminum instead of a pre-formed forging. While components machined from billet aluminum are not as strong as those made from forgings, as long as enough material is left in critical areas they will reliably hold up to the most severe abuse while offering design features like extra large flared mag-wells that are not currently available as forging blanks. When shopping for a CNC machined lower, look for the features and design that you want, pay attention to the overall weight, and note that 7075 aluminum is significantly stronger than 6061.

Polymer AR-15 80% Lower Receivers
Polymer AR15 lower receivers are injection molded with glass fiber reinforced Nylon 6-6 that has an excellent strength to weight ratio, is chemical resistant, and withstands high temperatures. While significantly less strong than aluminum, polymer lower receivers are noticeably lighter which makes them a great choice for ultra-light AR-15 builds. The polymer material is also much easier to machine than aluminum and most 80% polymer lowers come with their own single-use jigs and tooling so they can be finished on a drill press. When shopping for a Polymer lower receiver, we recommend looking for a threaded buffer tube insert and while all single-use jigs we have tried work fine, we highly recommend investing into a router jig for the best results.

Resin/Epoxy AR-15 80% Lower Receivers
Resin and epoxy lower receiver mold kits include a reusable nylon mold, two- part resin, and support braces to mold your own AR-15 lower receivers. When molded correctly, resin and epoxy AR-15 lower receivers have been shown to hold up to some aggressive use, but the material is brittle and long term use is questionable. When shopping for an AR-15 resin mold kit, we recommend treating it as a novelty project but not something to be used for building your primary rifle.

Jigs and Tooling for AR-15 80% Lower Receivers
For aluminum 80% lower receivers, tooling and a jig are required to complete the receiver. While polymer 80% lower receivers often times include a single-use jig that can be completed on a drill press, a proper lower receiver completion jig makes the process much faster, easier, and provides better results. Most jigs require a small router and are compatible, or easily changed over, to complete AR10, AR9, and AR45 lower receivers.

Note: We highly recommend drop-in style triggers for 80% lower receivers because even the slightest variation in the placement of the trigger pin holes can cause problems with the alignment of traditional triggers.
